Badges of the British Navy

A Pre 1918 Replica Unoffical Badge

Unofficial badges were designed and made by sailors mostly at the request of the ships captain long before and after ship badges were made official in the British Navy.

A replica badge of 'HMS Excellent' home of the Royal Navy Gunnery Training, Portsmouth. The centre picture of this badge appears in the official 'HMS Excellent' badge.

Post 1918 Replica Unofficial Badges

Situations arose like WW2 where badges were made for wartime situations.

A replica badge of Victoria Barracks 'now Portsmouth City Museum' Victoria Barracks was requistioned by the admiralty in early 1940's when parts of the accomodation in Victory Barracks were bombed out, the admiralty moved out of Victoria Barracks in the 1950's.

For Fun!

In the case of this replica badge and those of a similar comic nature they are personal GIFTS!

Im informed that this badge relates to the Duke Class Frigate HMS Iron Duke. The 'IRN' comes from Scotland's National Energy Drink 'IRN BRU'. HMS Iron Duke was built at Clyde being another connection.

An Oddity

As the badge say's you would think this is the badge of HMS Bellerophon but its a MISTAKE! Its actually the badge for HMS Revenge as the Bellerophon badge is fountained and not waved!
